Coordinator's Corner
Hello, I am Dr. Lorie Judson, Associate Director and the Undergraduate Chair/ Coordinator for the School of Nursing.
As the Associate Director, I work very closely with Dr. Cynthia Hughes to ensure our School of Nursing is meeting the standards of the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and our accrediting body, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).
As the Chair of the Undergraduate Commitee I work with the professors and instructors in the School of Nursing to make sure that the education we offer to you is the best possible. Each nursing class has elected representatives who are invited to our meetings to discuss curricular concerns.
In the role of Coordinator, I, with my assistant, Janet Mori secure clinical heath care facilities for student placement each quarter and procure faculty members to teach each of the courses we offer here in the School of Nursing. We work to update the class schedule you see posted on the bulletin board outside the Advisement Office and now published on this website by your webmaster.
Before registration begins for the next quarter, we try to have all of the clinical placements made with instructors assigned. However this doesn't always happen so smoothly and we can have difficulty either securing enough clinical sites and/or an instructor/s. This is why you may see changes made after you have registered. There are many nursing schools in the LA basin who compete for the same clinical areas at the health care facilities surrounding CSULA. Occasionally we make mistakes in scheduling resulting in course timing overlap. If you observe any errors or have concerns about the schedule, please email me at ljudson@calstatela.edu to discusss your concern. Flexibility is key as we work to get you the most appropriate clincial sites and instructors.
Dr. Hughes and I have met with all class officers and student organization leaders this quarter and we are planning to have a contiuing dialogue in the form of an Officer's Council that will meet once each quarter to formulate consistent guidelines for all officers and to discuss issues that may affect all classes. I make an effort to communicate with class presidents when information needs to be disseminated to the entire student body.
We have planned some student activities you should be aware of this school year. Coming up next Friday, Nov 7 is the Nursing Idol Talent Show for which we need participants and an audience. This begins an 7 PM in the Music Theatre here on campus and forms to register as a participant are available in the Nursing Advisement Office. I know there many talented students out there and we want you to show off! The first 100 spectators will be admitted at the door at a cost of only $2.
On Saurday Nov 15, Dr Tom Barkley will speak at Quiet Cannon in Monterey Park on "Ethnopharmacy and Polypharmacy." Regstration forms are avilable online or from your class president. Many instructors are giving extra-credit for this breakfast event from 8:30 AM to 12 PM. This event is sponsored by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, International, Nu Mu Chapter of CSULA. Hope to see many of you there!
We also have an all-school event planned on Friday, February 13th, 2009. We expect all students to attend this event which will focus on Evidence- Based Practice (EBP) related to patient safety. Faculty in each of the nursing classes in Winter quarter will give credit for attendance. We will invite distinguished speakers and invite students to submit posters they have made in various classes for viewing. Other area medical facilites and nursing schools will be invited to attend as well. The event is co-sponsored by the School of Nursing, Nightingale Society, Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society - Nu Mu chapter and the CSULA Alumni Association. The event will be held in the Golden Eagle Ballroom here on campus and will be a tremendous opportunity to showcase our students to the health care community and for our students to benefit from well-renown researchers who are here in our backyard.
I would like to keep an open-door policy for all students who have concerns. However if you are experiencing a problem with an instructor or course, please speak to the instructor first. If the issue is not resolved, if it is a clincial course, speak to the coordinator for the course designated on the class schedule. Finally, if you are not satisfied, come to me. However if at anytime during this process, you are feeling intimidated, by all means, email me and perhaps I can resolve the problem. We want all issues that are important to your success brought forward so they can be addressed in a timely manner. Thank you.
